Meet Taylor Coggins – Stories in Sensory

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself as a mom and business owner.

Hi! I’m Taylor Coggins. Mom of a two and four year old. I’m a full time stay at home mom who loves volunteering, being outside and creating fun sensory learning experiences for my girls. And now, through my business, I create for others as well! I balance school drop offs and nap times and try to squeeze in time to lesson plan, make playdough and find new favorite books! Our days are filled with a little bit of chaos and a whole lot of fun. ❤️

2. What three words describe you as a mom and business owner?

Passionate, joyful, explorer.

3. What advice would you give moms about successfully managing life as a mom and a business owner? How do you find balance and time for yourself?

Thankfully I have an incredibly supportive husband who encourages me to follow my dreams! We live in a community with so many wonderful resources to connect with other mothers (I’m a local volunteer coordinator for a mops group) and that is how I feel like I have support and encouragement. It’s a constant struggle to try and balance motherhood and building a business from the ground up, but it’s wonderful to show my daughters mommy can work hard and create something of value!

4. Tell us about your business and how it impacts families in Ventura County.

I create sensory play boxes based around books. I have a masters degree in reading and love creating lesson plans around favorite children’s books and help set families up with the tools they need to teach independent sensory play successfully in their homes! I partner with local charter schools and many families have chosen to use my boxes to supplement their curriculum. I also partner with James Store House to host quarterly play dates for children in foster care, and support their play room by donating sensory boxes for family visitations. The stories I have heard about estranged families being able to connect with their children through these boxes touch my heart and inspire me to keep creating!

5. What would you say to other moms aspiring to start a business?

I remember being in a place of feeling like I was drowning in motherhood. For almost 4 years all I did was be a mom. (And that is enough!) but once I found a community of women in a similar season as me and was able to find an outlet for my passions, I not only came alive and felt more like myself again, but felt like I became a better wife and mother and was contributing to my community in a meaningful way. I love encouraging moms that even when they feel like their season is overwhelming- they are not alone!
