Tis the Season to grab a great book!
Overbooked: December Book Recommendations
It might not be snowing here in Ventura County, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a good snuggle by the fire with a hot drink and new book!
FOR THE KIDS: Chapter Book
Flat Stanley: Stanley’s Christmas Adventure
Written by Jeff Brown
Would you even believe Santa could be a Scrooge this year? Two nights before Christmas, Stanley Lambchop is visited by Santa’s daughter, Sarah, enlisting his help to convince her father to deliver presents! Turns out, Santa had become jaded with the state of the world after watching too much television lately (#relatable). Fortunately, Stanley’s Christmas wish to help others softened Santa’s heart – followed by equally sentimental Christmas wishes by his brother and parents, Santa eventually concedes. Stanley and his family get to celebrate Christmas with a few gifts very briefly mentioned but the true spirit of giving and helping others is the central focus of this North Pole adventure!
FOR THE FAMILY:
Santa Post
Written by Emma Yarlett
Santa receives a letter that he cannot read, and the best part is your little readers get to open up the letter (and others) right there on the page. The beautiful illustrations and interactive flaps and letters make this an absolute family favorite every year. Santa wants to bring Amy what she asked for, so he asks for help from the elves, Mr. Polar Bear, and the Chief Reindeer. Will they figure it out? Can you help Santa figure out what Amy really wants for Christmas this year?
FOR MOM:
Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares
Written by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan
Okay so technically this is a YA novel, BUT it’s still a super fun storyline and a great way to get you into the holiday spirit! Two very opposite teens, living in New York City, become intertwined when they trade dares and secrets through a red notebook that takes them on adventures around the city. Without meeting in-person, they discover a true sense of kinship with one another as they navigate their personal and familial circumstances. In typical teenage fashion, drama ensues and the reader finds herself rooting for adult-level resolution that should likely be reserved for more mature (aka old) characters. If you love watching the on-screen version of books you read, then be sure to check out the series on Netflix too!
