Mommas, I don’t know about you, but I think we deserve a summer vacation just like our kiddos. Am I right? As much as I love being with my three-year-old, Mabel, I need a break to stay the best version of me I can for her. Usually, my self-care will look like a solo hike or drive up the coast blasting music. This time, I was fortunate to partner with Cormorant Boutique Hotel in La Jolla for a stunning stay all to myself.

Cormorant originally opened in the 1940s as the La Jolla Village Inn. The building has been completely refurbished to give a fresh spin on the hotel. Since the space also housed the first general store in La Jolla, Cormorant pays homage with a grab-and-go shop.

My Superior Sea View suite had a patio with gorgeous views. As I sipped my tea, I had my eyes on the ocean and world-renowned La Jolla Shores. Despite enjoying the sounds of hustle and bustle, my room was so peaceful overnight. I slept like a baby in my King bed and especially enjoyed controlling the TV before bedtime. Sorry, husband.

My mornings were spent grabbing a drink at the Parakeet Cafe or Dr. Juice. The latter was literally across the street from my patio and the cafe is an adorable staple throughout La Jolla. I grabbed an iced latte that hit the spot and to make it even better, they serve organic ingredients and house-made nut milks. The best part was that I was never too far away from home. I struck up a chat with a local guy who was also enjoying a coffee. Turns out Simi Valley is his hometown!

Enjoying La Jolla

After grabbing that fuel, I headed to the water. The array of pelicans before me and the sounds of sea lions barking is a great way to start the day, no? The air was brisk and the sun was starting to shine. I even took a walk-through actual caves on the beach. The best part is that my hotel was a street up. Cormorant’s central location made it so simple to go in and out.

Just up in the other direction is the quaint La Jolla Village. The main drag is filled with a fun mix of shops, restaurants, bars, and specialty places.

Just a 10-minute drive from Cormorant is the impressive Birch Aquarium at Scripps. As I found myself surrounded by the Pacific Ocean once again, I realized how hard it is to escape in San Diego. Perhaps that’s the reason I love it here so much. At Birch, get up close and personal with several nautical creatures including octopus and penguins. Although Birch is on the smaller side, it certainly makes for a more “relaxed” outing to an aquarium with little ones. It would be easy to enjoy an hour or so here and then head to lunch or another fun adventure (like nap time).

Also nearby is Torrey Pines Natural Reserve Park. Much like the famed coves and shores of La Jolla, nature enthusiasts flock to Torrey Pines. It’s over 1,700 acres of dreamy landscape, beaches, cliffs, trails, and of course, torrey pine trees.
