A trip to Lake Tahoe is what family vacation dreams are made of—towering trees, shimmering waters, and endless opportunities for adventure. Just 7-8 hours from Ventura County, Lake Tahoe is a great destination for those looking to make a road trip. September through December marks Lake Tahoe’s shoulder season, a perfect time to go for sunny weather and fewer tourists.

Lake Tahoe Family Vacation

We chose to stay on the North shore of Lake Tahoe in the endearing town of King’s Beach, a spot that captures the perfect blend of laid-back vibes and stunning scenery. From morning canoe sessions to sunset bike rides, here are the highlights that made our time there unforgettable.

Sand Harbor

If you go anywhere in North Lake Tahoe, let it be Sand Harbor. This spot easily became our favorite beach with its pristine water and gorgeous backdrop. Heads up—you’ll need a reservation to get in (check here). If you forget, you can still try your luck after 10:30 AM, when the no-shows free up some spots. Once you’re in, head left and park near the rentals where it’s a bit quieter. Speaking of rentals, I highly recommend a kayak or canoe from Clearly Tahoe Rentals. You can splurge on a completely see-through boat or opt for a more traditional one. Everyone in my family agreed that taking in the mountain views while paddling through crystal-clear water was the trip highlight.

After working up an appetite in the water, head over to Kokanee Bar & Grill. Whether you’re in the mood for a meal or a piña colada, they’ve got you covered. There’s also a little market for quick snacks—perfect for grabbing popsicles or chips.

King’s Beach State Park

King’s Beach State Park is another can’t-miss destination. The playground right on the beach is a game changer for parents of active little ones. The surrounding area is equally charming, with a strip of restaurants and shops all within walking distance from your beach chairs. We enjoyed walking to get ice cream, tacos, and even fitting in a round of mini-golf. If you need a break from the sun, a paved path weaves through the trees, providing pockets of shade. When you’re ready to hit the water, paddle board and boat rentals are available right by the pier. Note: The shoreline here is more pebbly than Sand Harbor.

Sweet Tahoe Time Ice Cream

It’s not a family vacation without a daily dose of ice cream! Sweet Tahoe Time Ice Cream is truly an experience in itself. We spent over an hour here enjoying our cones and the fun activities available. The outdoor seating features tables shaded by thatch umbrellas, surrounded by whimsical animal figurines and mushroom benches. Kids can hop on bikes, play disc golf, draw with sidewalk chalk, and play games while parents kick back with dessert.

Treehouse Cafe

If you love trying new coffee shops, check out the Treehouse Cafe. Here you’ll find quirky lego sets and playful touches, like a kids’ play kitchen in the backyard. A chalkboard wall invites creativity, while the live edge tables provide a touch of rustic charm. It’s a perfect spot for families looking for a laid-back vibe with plenty to keep the little ones entertained.

Mini Golf

When we needed a break from the beach, we wandered over to King’s Beach Miniature Golf, the most beautiful mini-golf spot you’ll ever see. The course is set beneath towering pine trees and decorated with retro elements that date back to the 1950s. The playlist is gold and the setting is quirky and fun. My son loved the junior-sized golf clubs and the uniquely painted golf balls—our crew went with Spider-Man and basketball designs.

Tricycle Adventures

North Lake Tahoe is a treasure trove of beautiful paved trails, perfect for soaking in the scenery at your own pace. The real MVP of our trip? My son’s trusty Radio Flyer tricycle. It turned every stroll into a mini adventure, letting us cover more ground while keeping the journey fun. For a paved trail with epic lookout points, don’t miss the Tahoe East Shore Trail.

Something For Everyone

Whether you’re floating on pristine waters, walking through the trees, or just breathing in that fresh mountain air, North Lake Tahoe delivers the perfect mix of relaxation and fun. We already can’t wait to go back!
