During the week, our family usually feels like we’re caught up in the constant hustle and bustle of dance classes, homework and playdates, so on the weekends, we try to slow down and find joy in simple acts of kindness and connection.

Rescue Readers

Several months ago, when we discovered the Rescue Readers program at Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS), we knew it was the perfect fit for us. Whenever our schedules allow, we eagerly make our way to the shelter in Camarillo, ready to spend quality time with our furry friends and share the magic of storytelling.

As we step into the shelter, we’re greeted by a chorus of excited barks. The anticipation in the air is palpable as we settle onto our carpet squares with a stack of books. We’re about 4 feet from the kennel gates, each reader directly in front of a dog of his or her choosing.  While the animals seem excited and even rowdy as we get started, they quickly settle down, some listening intently, others simply soaking up the warmth of our presence. In these moments, the boundaries between species seem to dissolve, and we’re all simply beings sharing a moment of connection.

Furry Friends and Cherished Ritual

For my daughters, these visits to the shelter have become a cherished ritual. They eagerly look forward to spending time with their furry friends, knowing that their presence brings comfort and companionship. As they read aloud, their confidence grows, and they take pride in knowing that they’re making a difference in the lives of these animals.

But the impact of the Rescue Readers program extends far beyond our family. Research shows that human interaction and the sound of our voices can significantly reduce stress and anxiety in shelter animals, ultimately increasing their chances of adoption. By spending time with these animals and showing them love and kindness, we’re helping to prepare them for their forever homes.

On our most recent visit, we also were treated with a visit into the Bunny Brigade playground.  We sat quietly among 10-12 adoptable bunnies and read to them, sometimes petting them gently, sometimes allowing them to nibble our pages or hop into our laps.

Simply Read

In conclusion, our journey with the Ventura County Animal Services Rescue Readers program has been nothing short of transformative. Through the simple act of reading aloud, we’ve forged deep connections with shelter animals, while also nurturing empathy and compassion in our own hearts. As we continue to turn the pages of our favorite books, we’re reminded of the power of love and connection to create positive change in the world, one story at a time.

Jen grew up in Simi Valley, singing and dancing both regionally and on screen. While she dreamt of going to Broadway, her body had other ideas, landing her with a decade of ankle operations and lots of recovery. But every storm has its rainbow, and it's in Simi where she met the love of her life, Chris, and has 2 gorgeous daughters - Leiana (10) and Kalea (8). Recently "retired" from her desk job, you'll often find her teaching dance, teaching sourdough classes, leading the PTA at her kids school or harvesting veggies in her huge backyard garden. And don't worry, she still sings in her car, so if you pull up next to her at a light, you might catch a melody or two.
