We’ve all felt it. When the last baby is on his/her way; it’s the last first you’ll ever do. I was talking to my best friend over the phone, and she told me her sister texted her to wish her niece a beautiful first day of kindergarten. She then followed that up with it is the last first you’ll ever do.
A First and A Last
We tend to forget that many firsts may be our last. You are only an age one time, you only experience a trip or a new talent one time. Sure, you can revisit it, doing it over but the FIRST is already done.
The first beach trip.
The first time you drop your child off at school.
Then it hit me this is my last first… first time dropping off but last time I’ll drop her off at 1st grade.

Last Child
The first conversations about dating and the curious questions of why does the ocean look blue but looks brown too? Why is the sky blue? The first time you get butterflies at the talent show.
But what happens when it’s your LAST baby, your LAST child? Very bittersweet moments come flooding your mind. His or her first steps and first words. What do you do as a parent? When you think about the last moments of your kids’ events.
It’s all the moments that bring you to where you are at in the present moment. As a parent we forget that there’s a first and a last moment or event. So what do we do to remember these moments?
Record it.
Take pictures.
Be in the moment.
I can guarantee that when our kids are older, they won’t be saying my mom shouldn’t have worn that bathing suit. What our children will say is “mom took us here for the first time.”
They will remember the power outages where candles were lit, and cookies were snuck from the pantry.
First, Last and In Between
Life is built on stories and moments not things you own. Days where time stands still sometimes. So, immerse yourself in all the firsts, the lasts, and every moment in between. Your kids will remember that!
