The Meaning of Coins at Gravesites
If you have ever been to a Veterans cemetery during Memorial Day then you might have noticed the coins placed on gravestones. Placing coins on graves is a Military tradition which pays respects to our fallen heroes when others visit their final resting place.
Placing a coin also shows the family of the deceased that someone has visited their loved one’s grave. This meaningful and heartfelt way to honor our fallen has extra significance depending on the coin placed.
Meaning of Coins
Each coin has a different meaning.
If a Penny is left behind, this means that someone has visited the grave.
If a Nickel is left behind, this means that visitor served with the deceased service member during boot camp.
If a Dime is left behind, this means that the visitor served alongside the deceased service member at some point in their military career.
If a Quarter is left behind, this means that the visitor was physically with the service member when they passed.
Reflect
These traditions hold special meaning to Military members and their families and should be always shared to keep them going throughout the years to come. This Memorial Day weekend, visit your local Veterans cemetery; bring a penny or two and reflect on the meaning of this holiday while leaving them behind to honor a fallen hero.
