I love giving and receiving presents.

I love finding the perfect something for that special someone.

I love shopping…until I don’t.

Listen, sometimes even before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season begins, I’m exhausted…tapped out…not so much interested in shopping til I drop, but in a good book, hot cup of tea, and early bedtime.

If that’s the mental state you find yourself in as well, I’ve got you covered, friend.

This is what I call The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Gift Giving where I walk around my house, take note of some things I love, and tell you to buy them because they’re great and I’m confident you’ll agree.

Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon Sunset Tea

This is my literal all time favorite tea that I recommend to everyone. It’s a black tea with a mixture of cloves, cinnamon and other spices. It’s slightly sweet, but not overwhelming and a really nice upgrade to your tea game. As an added bonus, Harney & Sons teas come in pretty, reusable tins, its loose-leaves wrapped in the cutest little sachets. Purchase from your couch at Harneyandsons.com or at your local Target or Barnes & Noble.

VitaMix Blender

Ok, I know there are a lot of die-hard Ninja, Blendtec, and KitchenAid fans out there. And I realize VitaMix is pricey. Like PRICEY. I see you. All I’m going to say is that my VitaMix is well over 10 years old, still works like a charm, it’s never had any issues and I still use it almost everyday. Oh, and it’s been shipped overseas and then back again, which goes to show how tough and sturdy it is. Sorbet, ice cream, soup, smoothies, flours, whatever…we use it for everything. I mean it when I say this is THE best small appliance investment we’ve ever made.

World Market Candle Holders

Ok, here’s the thing. Style and home decor are not my strong suits. Almost everything I buy is straight up functional because when it comes to decorating I have no idea what I’m doing. Also, I’d much rather spend money on a cup of coffee than decorative pillows and throw blankets…unless of course those throw blankets are sherpa-lined plush throw blankets, which in that case, I’m very much into.

However, two years ago I decided it was essential that we have enough candles on hand in case of an apocalypse. So I went on a bit of a candle buying spree…but not the scented kind because those give me a headache and if the apocalypse occurs I don’t need any zombies being lured to my house by the smell of fake pumpkin spice. All this to say, I needed candle holders for my candles and ended up with some from World Market that I love. Actually, they have a ton of options, so if you don’t particularly like the style I bought, I’m sure you’ll find something that works for you!

Coffee Frother

I don’t know why a little handheld frother makes my morning cup of coffee taste better, but it just does. Also it’s much less expensive than purchasing an espresso machine, which by the way, I’m not opposed to, but certainly don’t have over $500 to spare for that. We’re talking less than 20 bucks, friends, and that’s a purchase I can get behind. AND, here’s a totally easy recipe for your morning cup of coffee:

  • Fill your coffee cup 1/8 or 1/4 of a way with warm half n half
  • Add a tsp of honey and pinch or two of ground cinnamon
  • Use the frother, cup tilted at an angle, and watch the milk expand into frothy goodness.
  • Pour coffee over top and enjoy!

Dr. ForHair Products

I’m relatively new to the hair care world. I grew up using Suave shampoo and never really needed to consider using anything else. But hormones and stress and mom-life and the fact that I don’t always have time to wash my hair as often as I should—well, it got me rethinking my hair care products and routine. Honestly, all Dr. ForHair products are great, but I’m going to recommend one specific item that has been a game changer for me: Dr. ForHair’s Scalp Scaler. It’s a sea salt scalp exfoliator that removes excess dirt, grease, and buildup from the normal day to day…but also all the residue left by products like dry shampoo. I use it once a week in place of my regular shampoo and it always makes my scalp feel super clean and healthy. Plus, I’ve noticed a huge difference in how soft and clean my hair stays 2-3 days after use.

Katie Walker
Katie was born in Seoul, S. Korea and adopted at the age of one to a sweet family in Ojai, CA. While growing up as an adoptee came with challenges, she is incredibly grateful for the gift of processing her experience through writing in hope of supporting and encouraging other adoptees and families thinking about adoption. In 2005 Katie married her best friend, Dave, and since then have had three kids - Layla (14), Eli (12) and Caleb (9). They’ve spent a lot of their family life pursuing higher education, traveling, and driving kids from one activity to another. In a normal week, you can find Katie knee deep in homework assignments, Bible study research, and catching up on all the K-Dramas - always a cup of iced coffee in hand. Reading literary fiction, walking the dog (audio book or podcast in!), and working in the garden are other ways she unwinds and stays sane. Oh, and sometimes she cooks and cleans, but now that her kids are older she benefits from their homemade pancakes and ability to wipe down a countertop.
