For the Love of Another Fall

For last beach days and camping trips and playing video games until midnight. For the glory of sleeping in until noon and one more afternoon lounging in the sun. For one more hoorah before school begins.

For the love of another fall.

For the end of our summer schedules but not our summer tans. For back-to-school wardrobes or old ones that still barely fit. For the excitement of fresh school supplies and new schedules.

For the love of another fall.

For Pinterest boards of cute bento boxes and happy-faced PB&J’s. And for the knowledge that by October we’ll likely be scrambling to send our kids to school with leftover rice, the last piece of lunchmeat and whatever else we can possibly find in the cupboards. How do these kids eat so much?

For the love of another fall.

For moms doing the happy dance because school starting means we retrieve a few peaceful moments to ourselves again. For the joy of drinking our hot coffee in silence after morning drop offs. For moms who wish summer never ended and are feeling unprepared to begin the rat race of a million activities.

For the love of another fall.

For moms who are an emotional wreck because they’re sending their kids off to school for the first time and for moms whose teenagers will be graduating high school—how is this possible? The cliche that “the days are long, but the years are short” is true and we’ve always known that, but now we’re learning it in a new way.

For the love of another fall.

For moms who live with the grief that due to illness, death, or some other terribly unspoken circumstance your child won’t be returning to school this year like they should be. We mourn this loss with you. For moms who choose homeschooling or private or public and for those who don’t have a choice but wish they did.

For the love of another fall.

For moms who are totally “on it” and have bought all the supplies, washed the clothes, and packed the backpacks for the first day. For those who will barely wake up in time with unbrushed teeth and sleep in their eyes to get their kids to school on time. For grandparents, foster parents, aunts, uncles, and guardians who feel unprepared and uneasy in raising tiny humans and worry they won’t know what to do. For extra coffee and long exhales because if it’s true that “it takes a village”, we’re going to need help from some extra villagers this season.

For the love of another fall.

For teachers who have prepped all summer to get their classrooms ready and are giddy to start the new year. For school staff who are dedicated to making this a great year even though they’re already feeling a little stressed out over it. For those who are underpaid and overworked but still show up no matter what.

For the love of another fall.

For the expectation of cooler temperatures, thrift store sweater finds, and pumpkin spice lattes. For knowing this year will go by in the blink of an eye and for sweet reminders to live in this moment right now. For the joy of fresh starts and dreaming up new possibilities.

For the love of another fall.

For hope and joy and pain and disappointment. For all the ways in which this new season will bless, challenge, and exhaust us.

For the love of another fall.

Katie Walker
Katie was born in Seoul, S. Korea and adopted at the age of one to a sweet family in Ojai, CA. While growing up as an adoptee came with challenges, she is incredibly grateful for the gift of processing her experience through writing in hope of supporting and encouraging other adoptees and families thinking about adoption. In 2005 Katie married her best friend, Dave, and since then have had three kids - Layla (14), Eli (12) and Caleb (9). They’ve spent a lot of their family life pursuing higher education, traveling, and driving kids from one activity to another. In a normal week, you can find Katie knee deep in homework assignments, Bible study research, and catching up on all the K-Dramas - always a cup of iced coffee in hand. Reading literary fiction, walking the dog (audio book or podcast in!), and working in the garden are other ways she unwinds and stays sane. Oh, and sometimes she cooks and cleans, but now that her kids are older she benefits from their homemade pancakes and ability to wipe down a countertop.
